- OK...here's an interesting little toy i picked up on a pd board earlier
- today..
-
- IT's called FDformat...it allows you to CUSTOM format any disk to any
- specs...(as long as your drive can handle those specs of course)...anyways..
-
- I got it to format a DSDD 5¼" disk to over 850K!
- a DSHD formatted to over 1.5megs...
-
- Included in the zip is also a program that allows you to read/write the
- floppies....(it patches the bios, so that the drive won't double step)...(some
- bios's aren't overiden by the boot sector info...therefore, this little
- program patches the bios with the proper info so that it'l read the custom
- formatted floppies)...I haven't played around with this program on my 3½" 720K
- drive, but will do that very soon...so...if you're always running out of room
- on your floppies, or if you like to live dangerously with your computer
- equipment (gil!), then this is a definite must for you....here are the specs
- that will give the most capacity on a 5¼" 1.2M drive.
-
- 'Fdformat {d:} T83 H2 S10 D24 {V}' - the V is optional (it specifies that you
- want to verify while formatting...i use norton's DiskTest program to verify
- after i have formatted the disk)..
- these specs format the disk to 83 tracks, 2
- sides, 10 sectors per track (11 gave errors), and 48 root directory entries..
- a total capacity of over 850K
-
- 'Fdformat {d:} T83 H2 S18 D24 {V}' will format a DSHD 5¼" disk to 83 tracks, 2
- sides, 18 sectors per track (haven't tried 19 yet), and 48 root directory
- entries.. a total capacity of about 1.51Megs!!!
-
- as to formatting to higher capacities, since my disks are generic, i couldn't
- squeeze any more capacity out of them by increasing the SECTORS PER TRACK...
- but if your disks are made of better material than my generic ones, you might
- be able to get more out of 'em'..
